About Bakar(Croatia) 

 

Bakar (Italian: Buccari, Turkish is a town in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County in western Croatia. The population of the town is 1,566 (2001), while the population of the municipality is 7,773. 90% declare themselves Croats (2001). The old part of Bakar is situated on a hill overlooking the Bay of Bakar. "Bakar" is the Croatian and Turkish word for copper. Bakar is a port for bulk cargo and used to be known for its industrial complex that included coke factory which produced considerable amount of pollution. Bakar's coke factory was closed in 1995 and the area's pollution has subsided significantly.​​

​The small town of Bakar, just east of Rijeka, fell out of favor with tourists when a number of industrial plants opened in the area. Since those industries have left, the town has once again been attracting visitors. There are a number of small attractions in Bakar, which are worth seeing.

​that Bakar was among the first towns in Croatia to have electricity

On 25 June 1894 the streets of the Bakar were illuminated by electricity for the first time, immediately following the cities of Varaždin and Rijeka. It is interesting to note that at this point Nikola Tesla was only proposing to introduce electricity in Zagreb, which reveals that the inhabitants of Bakar and their representatives were very sophisticated and open to progress and achievements.On 25 June 1894 the streets of the Bakar were illuminated by electricity for the first time, immediately following the cities of Varaždin and Rijeka. ​The town of Bakar was built by two parts, old part which is situated on a hill and newer part situated near the coast. During the history town was important trading port, fishing, viniculture, shipbuilding and maritime center with a nautical school opened 1849.
Bakar economic decline was caused by the development of steamships and, especially, the construction of the railway to Rijeka 1873, which by-passed the town of Bakar. Railway branch to Bakar is built later in 1931.
Bakar is a port for bulk cargo and used to be known for its industrial complex that included coke factory which produced considerable amount of pollution. Bakar coke factory was closed in 1995 and since then Bakar pollution subsided significantly.
Small dock is still used for building and repairing ships.

 

Bakar is divided into two sections, Grad and Primorje. Grad is the old town and Primorje is the new town located along the coast. In Grad is the triangular shaped Frankopan Castle, which dates to the 15th Century and is still in good condition. Also of interest, the Bakar Civic Museum contains stonework from the Roman era and Middle Ages. The local church has some notable religious art and a 14th Century Crucifix.
Kvarner represents one of the most beautiful and most visited tourist regions of Croatia sea coast. Beinig located in the nearest area of Croatian sea to the central and west European states, it is well visited destination, especially by the guests who at the holiday diced to come by car.
Main and the biggest city of this region is city of Rijeka, administrative and economic center of Kvarner region, large port and holiday resort.
Consisted by some of most beautiful Croatian islands such as Cres, Krk and Rab, which are as well the largest islands of Croatia and the most attractive ones.
Apart of Rijeka as center, this area is also very rich with small but extremely attractive villages and summer holiday resort, surrounded by beautiful Mediterranean vegetation, small and hidden bays, coves and beaches, very attractive ones, which during the summer are a real paradise for the tourists from all over the world.
